چکیده

: From the physico-mathematical view point, the imitation game between man and machine, proposed by Turing in 1950, is a game between a discrete and a continuous system. Turing stresses several times the laplacian nature of his discrete-state machine, yet he tries to show the undetectability of a functional imitation, by his machine, of a system (the brain) that, in his words, is not a discrete-state machine, as it is sensitive to limit conditions. We shortly compare this tentative imitation with Turing’s mathematical modeling of morphogenesis (his 1952 paper, focusing on continuous systems which are sensitive to initial conditions). On the grounds of recent knowledge about dynamical systems, we show the detectability of a Turing Machine from many dynamical processes. Turing’s hinted distinction between imitation and modeling is developed, jointly to a discussion on the repeatability of computational processes. The main references are of a physico-mathematical nature, but the analysis is purely conceptual.

Undecidability of the Imitation Game

This paper considers the concept of computability in the original version of the imitation game proposed by Alan M. Turing, the so-called Turing test. In the Turing test, a man, an imitating machine, and an interrogator are the players of an imitation game. In our version of the Turing test, the imitator and the interrogator are formalized as Turing machines, allowing us to derive some impossib...

A computer program capable of passing I.Q. tests

The Imitation Game (Alan M. Turing, 1950), now commonly known as the Turing Test (see, e.g., Oppy and Dowe, http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/turing-test, 2003), was proposed as a way in which thinking or intelligence could be ascribed to any agent including a computer program or machine able to play the game. People routinely ascribe intelligence to humans and other animals by a variety of mea...

Bayesian perspective over time

Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...

The Imitation Game

This issue of the Kybernetes journal is concerned with the philosophical question Can a Machine Think? Famously, in his 1950 paper ‘Computing Machinery and Intelligence’ [11], the British mathematician Alan Turing suggested replacing this question which he found “too meaningless to deserve discussion” with a simple [behaviourial] test based on an imagined Victorian-esque pastime he entitled the...

Turing ’ s Imitation Game : a discussion with the benefit of hind

Alan Turing proposed the imitation game in his 1950 paper titled “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” [1]. This paper discussed the arguments for and against artificial intelligence that existed then. Since this time, science has advanced in areas of neuroscience, machine learning, and computer theory granting us a different perspective on the argument. This paper discusses the history of Art...
